Kundli basics

What is a kundli?

A kundli (also called janam kundli, janam patrika or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows which of the 12 rashis was rising in the east, and where the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) were placed across the 12 houses of your chart.

Vedic astrologers use this map to read your nature, the main areas of your life and the timing of events. The rules come from classical texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, attributed to Maharishi Parashara.

Inside your chart

What you see in your kundli

PartWhat it means
Lagna (Ascendant)The sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It shapes your body, nature and the way your whole chart is arranged. It changes about every two hours.
Rashi (Moon sign)The sign the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology this is the sign used for your daily rashifal. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days.
NakshatraThe lunar mansion the Moon was in. There are 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13°20′ of the sky and split into four padas. Your nakshatra also decides which Mahadasha you were born into.
Planet tableEach planet's sign, house, degree, and whether it is retrograde.
Navamsa (D9)A divisional chart that divides each sign into nine parts. Astrologers use it closely for marriage and for the inner strength of each planet.
Manglik checkWhether Mars sits in a house that the classical rule marks as Manglik.
MahadashaThe planetary period you are running now, from the Vimshottari dasha system.

Birth time

Why your birth time matters

Your lagna moves through all 12 signs in about 24 hours, so it changes roughly every two hours. Within one sign, the lagna moves about one degree every four minutes. The Navamsa lagna changes even faster, roughly every 13 minutes.

So a wrong birth time can give you a different lagna, a different house for each planet and a different reading. Use the time on your birth certificate or hospital record if you have it. If you only know “early morning” or “around noon”, tick “I don’t know my exact time”. In the full report, our astrologer checks two or three past events in your life on the call, and if the time is off, we correct it and redo the report at no cost.

Chart styles

North Indian and South Indian charts

Both styles show the same chart. Only the drawing is different.

  • North Indian chart: the houses stay fixed in a diamond pattern and the sign numbers move. The top middle diamond is always the first house (lagna).
  • South Indian chart: the signs stay fixed in a square grid, starting with Mesh (Aries) in the second box of the top row, and the lagna is marked inside its sign.

Use whichever your family is used to.

North Indian chart. The first house (lagna) is highlighted in gold.

Zodiac

Which zodiac do we use?

We use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. This is the standard in Indian Vedic astrology and the one used by the Indian government’s national ephemeris. Western sites use the tropical zodiac, so your sign there may be one sign ahead of your Vedic sign. That is normal and not a mistake.

FAQ

Free kundli questions

Is this kundli really free?

Yes. Our free chart tool will show your chart, planet table, Navamsa, Manglik check and current Mahadasha at no cost, with no limit. It opens soon. Until then, you can order the full reading with your details carried over.

Can I make a kundli by name only?

No. A real kundli needs your date, time and place of birth, because it is a picture of the sky at that moment. A name alone cannot place the planets. Name-based methods belong to numerology, which is a separate system.

Can I make a kundli without a birth time?

Yes, but with limits. Without a time we can still show your Moon sign, most likely nakshatra and planet signs. The lagna and houses need the time. Our astrologers can help estimate the time from past life events in the full report.

Is a kundli in Hindi or Bengali available?

Yes. Choose हिंदी or বাংলা and your kundli and report come in that language.

How accurate is an online kundli?

The calculation is exact if the birth details are exact. The planet positions come from standard astronomical data. What needs a human is the reading: what those positions mean for your life. That is what our astrologers add in the paid report.

Will my kundli change over time?

No. Your birth chart never changes. What changes is the time you are in: your dasha period and the current movement of the planets (gochar).

Do you share my birth details?

No. We use them only to make your chart. You can ask us to delete them at any time by writing to care@ancientjyotish.com.
