The basics
Kundli matching (kundli milan or gun milan) is the Vedic way of checking how well two people suit each other for marriage. The most common method in North and East India is Ashtakoota Milan, which compares eight factors (kootas) and gives a total of 36 points (gunas). All eight are worked out from the nakshatra and rashi of the Moon in each person’s chart.
In South India, many families use a related method with ten factors, called Dashakoota or the ten poruthams.

Score guide
By tradition, 18 out of 36 is the minimum most families accept.

But the total is not everything. A score of 28 with uncancelled Nadi dosha may be a bigger concern than a score of 20 with no dosha. That is why astrologers read the full charts before advising.
Doshas
Nadi dosha happens when both people have the same Nadi. There are three Nadis: Aadi, Madhya and Antya, and every nakshatra belongs to one of them. When both share the same Nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 out of 8.
Classical texts list exceptions. For example, many astrologers treat it as cancelled when both people have the same rashi but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different rashis, or when the lords of both Moon signs are the same or friends. Whether an exception applies needs a careful look at both charts.
Doshas
Bhakoot dosha is about the distance between the two Moon signs. When the signs sit 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 places from each other, Bhakoot scores 0 out of 7. Like Nadi dosha, it can be cancelled, for example when both Moon signs share the same lord or their lords are friends.
Manglik
If one partner is Manglik and the other is not, many families worry. In practice, astrologers check whether the other chart has Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same Manglik houses, which is often seen as balancing it. They also look at whether the Manglik placement is weakened in the chart itself. A Manglik result is a reason to look closer, not a reason to panic.
Name matching
Some sites offer matching by name, using the first syllable of each name to guess the nakshatra. That only works if the name was given by the traditional naming syllable of the birth nakshatra, and many names are not. For a reliable match, use the date, time and place of birth for both people.

We can still find the Moon sign and usually the nakshatra, which is enough for Guna Milan in most cases. If the Moon was near the edge of a nakshatra that day, the score may change, and we will say so.
